Non-Accredited College Program Manual
course fees
There is no matriculation charge to process your application and enroll
you as a student. There are three kinds of fees:
- There is an annual tuition fee of $210. This must be paid each year
until you complete your studies.
- There is a grading fee of $210 ($70 per credit hour) for each of
your Subject Evaluation Reports. Eight Reports (3 credit hours each) are
required for completion of the Bachelor, Master and Doctor levels.
- There is a fee to grade your final paper, which is worth 6 hours:
Bachelor's Paper, $420; Master's Thesis, $840; Doctoral Dissertation, $1260.
If you complete your studies in one year, the total Bachelor's program
costs $2310, the Master's program costs $2730, and the Doctoral program costs
$3150. You may take longer than a year, as long as you pay your annual tuition
fee. Your only added costs are your textbooks.
patient scholarship
For patients of Dr. Plumb, the fees you pay for counseling and the therapy
you receive count partially toward your course fees and studies at BrainChanger
Institute. So you may take weekly therapy treatments, receiving 1/4 credit
hour per session (maximum credit 12 hours), and your therapy fees count toward
half of your academic fees. Example: at the Bachelor level, if you were taking
continuous therapy treatment, you would pay academic fees of $105 tuition,
$105 per each of four Subject Evaluation Reports, and $210 for grading your
final paper. If completed in one year, your total cost would be $735 plus
textbooks (Master's, $945; Doctor's, $1155).
Non-accredited learning
non-accredited
BrainChanger Institute, like most academies and colleges in the nation,
is a non-accredited private school of psychology operated as a proprietorship
of Kenneth W. Plumb. BrainChanger Institute credits are not transferable
to other colleges. Some colleges and universities may accept your independent
studies at BrainChanger Institute on a course-by-course basis, or they may
require you to take an entrance exam to prove your competence in the subjects
you have studied.
non-transferable
BrainChanger Institute will provide you a transcript of your coursework.
The diploma you receive from BrainChanger Institute will not qualify you
for professional licensing. Your employer may be impressed with your initiative
for doing these independent studies, but your degree may not qualify you
for the employment position you seek. If you need accreditation for your
studies, then BrainChanger Institute is not for you.
concentrated learning
If you prefer the concentrated study in subjects of your interest, then
BrainChanger Institute provides that for you, because you are not required
to study all the subjects of a typical liberal arts education. An accredited
institution may require you to study literature, history, math or other subjects
that are not in your field of interest. The advantage of non-accredited learning
is the fast-paced, intensive study of information you will use in your work
and life.
we give you credit
BrainChanger Institute will give you credit for what you have already
learned. If you will provide a full accounting of courses you have taken,
degrees you have earned, books you have read, projects you have been involved
in, and life-work that you have performed, BrainChanger Institute may give
you academic credit. If you can demonstrate that you have earned credit hours,
then you may pay half-fee for those hours instead of taking the courses.
If you have written a book or have directed a large project, you may report
this activity instead of writing a final paper, paying only half-fee.
should you do this?
If learning is more important to you than accreditation, BrainChanger
Institute is a wonderful choice. If however you need a formal degree from
an accredited college, this is not the place. This is an inexpensive method
of learning what you are interested in. By enrolling in BrainChanger Institute,
you are agreeing that accreditation is not important to you. BrainChanger
Institute is a non-accredited private school, specializing in psychology
studies.
How the program works
first
Send your completed application indicating your choice of course to BrainChanger
Institute, along with the tuition fee of $210. Application, as well as credit
card payment, may also be made on-line at www.brainchanger.com.
second
BrainChanger Institute will send you by mail or e-mail your course requirements,
along with a list of your assigned textbooks. You may choose from any of
these books to meet your requirements, or you may choose other text material,
with approval and credit assignment of the Institute.
Each textbook is given hourly credits, based on its difficulty level.
In general, self-help books are given a credit of one hour, popular psychology
books are given two hours, and college textbooks are given three hours. The
Institute assigns credit to each book based on several criteria, so check
to see how much credit you will be given. Each course requires three hours
of credit, so you may study one book at the college text level for the full
three hours, or you may choose to cover the subject with more than one book
at a simpler level. You will prepare one Subject Evaluation Report on the
course, no matter how many books you read.
third
Purchase your assigned texts or chosen alternative books from a college,
university or technical bookstore in your immediate area or directly from
the publisher. You may wish to order them online from bookstores such as
Amazon.com. The BrainChanger Institute book list contains ISBN numbers. Should
you require assistance in this matter, do not hesitate to contact the Institute.
fourth
Look at the list of all the courses you are required to complete and choose
the course you would like to study first. Read and study the assigned textbook
chapter by chapter, answering any study questions or study problems at the
end of each chapter. These study problems are for your benefit, so take notes
or make book notations on important topics to aid you in writing your Subject
Evaluation Report. Also try to choose the topic of your Final Paper or Project
early so that you can utilize some or all of your core course work in your
research and planning.
fifth
When you have completed your study of the subject matter and text, you
are required to write a Subject Evaluation Report. Use the proper grammatical
and style formats. BrainChanger Institute accepts reports written in all
standard formats, as long as you are consistent throughout your paper.
sixth
Send your completed Subject Evaluation Report to the Institute for grading.
Be sure to complete a Cover Sheet Form for each Report submitted. Also include
your payment for the $210 grading fee. You may of course pay this by credit
card at brainchanger.com.
It normally takes two to four weeks to receive your grade. Therefore,
proceed to the next core course of your choice and begin to read and study
the text material while awaiting your Subject Evaluation grade.
seventh
Once you have prepared and submitted for grading the eight Subject Evaluation
Reports for all core courses, start work on your Bachelor?s Paper, Master?s
Thesis or Doctoral Dissertation or equivalent project.
You must first submit a proposal for your final research paper or project.
After your proposal is approved by the Institute, begin your work. Your Final
Paper covering your research or project may be written in any standard style
or format.
eighth
Send your completed Final Paper to the Institute for grading. Include
a Cover Sheet and a check for the grading fee, or pay by credit card online.
- A Bachelor Paper requires a $420 grading fee.
- A Master's Thesis requires a $840 grading fee.
- A Doctoral Dissertation requires a $1260 grading fee.
ninth
Once your final paper or project has been accepted and graded, you will
receive a framed diploma along with a transcript of your grades.
Subject Evaluation Reports
demonstration of comprehension
A Subject Evaluation Report is required for each core course from which
you are not exempted by the Institute. The purpose of the Report is to demonstrate
that you have achieved comprehensive understanding of the material covered
and can apply that knowledge. The Report allows maximum range of expression:
you may relate each core course to your field, profession, or something relevant
to current issues. This approach allows you the flexibility to analyze the
material from many different perspectives.
To receive a grade for a core course subject you must prepare a Subject
Evaluation Report and submit it to the Institute for evaluation. When you
prepare a Subject Evaluation Report, please complete and submit a Cover Sheet
listing the name of the paper, the number and name of the course, your name
and address, and the date.
The primary difference among the three degrees of study is in the number
of books required to cover a subject. At the Bachelor level, the Report can
be based on only one book. At the Master level, at least two books must be
referred to in the Report. At the Doctor level, at least three books must
be read and reported on to cover the subject.
Select an important issue in your field, and use the concepts and principles
in your text to analyze or describe the issue. Illustrate what made you think
a particular issue was significant.
Use concepts and principles from the text to analyze or describe relevant
work in which you or other professionals are directly involved. The purpose
is to relate academic concepts to practical problems.
NOTE: Regardless of the perspective from which you write your Report
it must show a benefit to humanity (i.e., How this knowledge can benefit
society).
When writing your Subject Evaluation Report please remember that it should
be fifteen pages long. The Report will not be accepted if it is less than
ten pages in length. Remember to include a Cover Sheet with each Subject
Evaluation Report submitted to the Institute.
Use proper grammar and format style at all times. You may use any style
that is consistent with standard reporting. All Subject Evaluation Reports
must be typed or printed on a word processor.
The Subject Evaluation Report must be an original paper which relates
the subject material to the student's area of specialization.
Send your check for the grading fee in the same envelope as your Subject
Evaluation Report, or pay by credit card online.
Final Paper or Project
bachelor paper, masters thesis, doctoral dissertation
The final paper or project is the last step in completing your degree
program. It must demonstrate that you have achieved a specialized knowledge
at your degree level. Further, it must be original and demonstrate your ability
to research and communicate concepts and principles in your area of specialization.
General List of Objectives
The ability to express ideas - both your own and those of others - clearly,
correctly, and effectively, and to convey your concepts to other authoritative
professionals in your specialization.
- The overall competence and ability to work in areas less thoroughly
documented than your text material.
- The ability to discover and utilize research data and libraries when
conducting research in your specialization.
- The skills and ingenuity in locating collateral sources yielding
additional pertinent information.
- The skills in selecting from all the material available those facts
and ideas that are immediately pertinent to your specialization.
- The ability to organize and document information properly and to
present it clearly, logically, effectively, and correctly with respect to
grammar, spelling and punctuation.
The Final Paper or Project is an accumulation of what you have learned
in your degree program and through your professional work and life experience,
as well as the independent research you have compiled in a final paper or
project. It must be an original paper which relates the subject material
to your area of specialization.
length guidelines
When writing your paper please remember that it should fit these length
guidelines:
- A Bachelor Paper should be twenty-five to thirty-five pages in length.
- A Master's Thesis should be one hundred ten to one hundred twenty-five
pages in length.
- A Doctoral Dissertation should be one hundred twenty-five to one
hundred fifty pages in length.
Remember to include a Cover Sheet with each paper submitted to the Institute.
Use proper grammar and format style at all times. You may use any style
that is consistent with standard reporting. Your final paper must be typed
or printed on a word processor.
presenting final paper
Please bind your Report as a book. A print shop or an office supply store
can spiral-bind, wire-bind, or tape-bind your paper. You may also submit
your punched sheets in a ring binder or friction binder.
Levels of study
bachelor of arts in psychology
At the undergraduate level, the Institute offers programs of study leading
to the bachelor of arts degree in psychology, with applications in several
fields. Two graduate programs are offered by the Institute leading to the
master of arts and the doctor of philosophy degrees.
Psychology is a broad discipline that incorporates material from the natural
sciences, other social sciences and the humanities. The study of psychology
entails an examination of the human condition that is relevant to a wide
range of occupations. A psychology major serves as the basis for an excellent
liberal arts education. The major also serves as an excellent introduction
to the world of scientific inquiry.
Psychology students learn about the important concepts that underlie current
scientific thought and they receive training in the application of psychological
research methods. The non-accredited educational background you obtain as
a student majoring in psychology will prove useful in a variety of professional
settings and will provide adequate preparation for entry-level positions
in a variety of fields.
The undergraduate program is designed to provide majors with a base of
scientific knowledge in psychology, as well as a broad background in the
field for students who want to pursue graduate study.
requirements
A student must complete 30 credit hours of study to earn the Bachelor
of Arts in Psychology. Because this is a specialized degree, and is limited
to certain aspects of psychology, your diploma will state your Major or main
interest. There is some flexibility in planning your course of study, so
some will in a Bachelor of Arts in:
- Psychology of Hypnotherapy
- Psychology of Counseling
- Psychology of Health
- Psychology of Persuasion, or
- other majors
master of arts in psychology
The Master of Arts requires an additional 30 credit hours of study. The
normal plan of study will require 8 college textbook courses at 3 credit
hours each, with a final paper at 6 credit hours, for a total of 30 credit
hours. The higher degrees will require more intense study of more difficult
materials. A minimum course grade of "C" must be achieved to have any course
apply toward the Master of Arts in Psychology.
suggested plan of study
Before beginning a psychology major or minor, students should meet with
a representative of the Institute, as the choice of electives strongly depends
on students' educational and career intentions. In general, students should
complete the core curriculum as early as they can and delay electives until
later.
The master of arts program in psychology allows students to structure
programs to meet their individual goals. A minimum of 30 hours are required
for the degree, including core curriculum plus electives.
doctor of philosophy in psychology
The Doctor of Philosophy requires an additional 30 credit hours. The normal
plan of study will require 8 college textbook courses at 3 credit hours each,
with a final paper at 6 credit hours, for a total of 30 credit hours. The
higher degrees will require more intense study of more difficult materials.
A minimum course grade of "B" must be achieved to have any course apply toward
the Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology.
every level requires
- core curriculum, minimum of 4 courses, totalling 12 credit hours
- elective curriculum, maximum of 12 credit hours
- final paper, 6 credit hours
- total 30 hours
psychology courses
Courses are numbered for the three levels of study: 100s-Bachelor; 200s-Master;
300s-Doctor.
Courses may be studied from a standard college textbook (for 3 credit
hours) or from more than one popular psychology book (at 1 or 2 credit hours
each).
At each level of study, four courses must be selected from the core curriculum.
For example, at the bachelor level, 4 courses from the 100s must be studied.
Each course may be covered in one college textbook or in more than one popular
psychology book. Each course requires 3 credit hours for completion.
